This morning, addons.mozilla.org reached a huge milestone: we served our 1 billionth add-on download since we started keeping track of downloads in 2005.
This number only includes downloads from addons.mozilla.org, but as many add-ons are hosted elsewhere, we can be sure the actual number is even higher. This is a very exciting week for Firefox add-ons, with the launch of Fashion Your Firefox yesterday, offering a new way for first-time add-on users to customize their browser.
This amazing feat was made possible by the huge community of add-on users, developers, and enthusiasts, as well as non-Firefox applications that embrace Mozilla add-ons like Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, Sunbird, Komodo, Flock, and Songbird, to name a few.
At 1.5 million add-on downloads per day and increasing, I'm confident our next billion will arrive even more quickly than the 3.5 years it took for the first. If you're not using an add-on yet, try one out:

They're pretty popular.

SnagWire: EA has shut down its mysterious Blueprint Division though not the projects that were being worked on.
One of these 'projects' that will be allocated elsewhere is the previously unannounced Boom Blox 2.
Apparently, work is already underway on the sequel to the spring's innovative Wii puzzle game that received critical acclaim and generated decent revenue after being briefly considered a sales flop.

Good news for Firefox users who have lusted over Chrome and Safari's option that lets you "tear" away tabs from an open window. The latest build of 3.1 offers it as a standard feature--and it works marvelously.
As in Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari browsers you simply pull away a tab from the interface and it turns into its own window. Likewise you can drag it back into an already opened window, just like you'd do to re-order your existing tabs.
Below is a quick video demo of how the new tear-away feature works, both with dragging tabs and choosing to open them via contextual menu.

Games Are Evil writes, "An article today from the Natural Resource Defense Council discusses the cost of leaving your console online when not actively playing. According to the report, a staggering fifty percent of all gamers leave their consoles on when not in use. This can lead to some pretty extreme costs, as you can see from the chart at right.
Those of you who are folding at home on your PlayStation 3 are taking the worst hit, swallowing an extra $145 worth of energy costs every year..."

Split-Screen writes: "We met Ashim Mathur, the National Marketing Manager of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. Earlier, Microsoft India had said they expected Gears of War 2 to help boost sales of their console, and today Mathur said that while they can't reveal the exact figures, sales for the 360 went up by 30 to 45 per cent in the wake of Gears 2.
"So, the XBox 360 has apparently got a lead in the console wars here, for now anyway."

Sony's head of public relations for the UK, David Wilson, has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company is pleased with LittleBigPlanet's retail performance and expects the title to perform better due to "word of mouth".
The Media Molecule title went on sale on November 5, and entered the UK's All Format chart in fourth place, the same week as the company's MotorStorm: Pacific Rift came in at 29. The following week both titles dropped in the charts to 19 and 35 respectively.
"We're really pleased with the initial reaction to LittleBigPlanet - it has been our highest scoring game ever I believe with a Metacritic score of 95 and a huge list of 10/10s or 100 per cent scores," explained Wilson.
"We are also pleased with its commercial performance. In other times of the year it would be a clear number one - so you have to put the chart in context.

Electronic Arts has apparently closed the doors on the supposedly secret internal Blueprint division in the business cuts that were announced recently.
Although nothing much was said on the record about the division, it was originally initiated to work on new intellectual property and was headed up by Neil Young - but when Young left in June this year to head up his own company an internal email from EA Games president Frank Gibeau handed control over to Louis Castle.
