Portrush Raft Race

As usual I'm playing catch-up with my posts and should have put this up a fortnight ago, but I think the fact that I was so ill after this event, probably from sunstroke, kinda put me off thinking about it enough to post up! It was a glorious day and the atmosphere was that of fun and merry-making.

The rafts varied from nothing more than a huge block of polysterene with seats cut out ...

to some quite impressively put together contraptions.

Once all the rafts were in position on the beach everyone was cleared off the beach whilst the parachute jumpers landed to mark the start of the event.

The entrants tested out the water in their various costumes before standing at the ready by their crafts.

Then they were off, tearing down the beach with crafts bobbing along and into the water.

I was amazed that only one raft actually capsized. The rest made an impressive start out towards the sea and round the buoy towards the harbour.

The finish was a bit like a Marathon, the front runners coming in with an impressive time whilst others trailed in a considerable time later. Some were indeed still struggling to make it home long after we'd headed off for home!
